An aerial view shows the Wanjiazhai Dam under construction over the Yellow River in Shanxi province, northern China, September 1998. The US$3.0 billion project would pump water uphill 648 metres and through 11 tunnels of a total length of 220 km in its three sections, delivering water to Taiyuan, the coal-mining centre of Datong and industrial Shuozhou. The dam, 434 metres across, 105 meters high, contains 1.5 million tonnes of concrete.
