The School for the Blind in Tibet was founded in 1999 by Sabriye Tenberken, a blind German social worker. Before that, blind and visually impaired children had not been able to attend school in Tibet. Sabriye had also developed Tibetan Braille, which later became the official reading and writing system for the blind and visually impaired in Tibet.
