Area 278,400 square miles (721,000 square km). Most of the province consists of mountains and high plateaus, and it has an average elevation of some 9,900 feet (3,000 metres). In the north are the Altun and Qilian mountain ranges, which form the divide between the interior and exterior drainage systems of China.
