Harbin is the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang province in northeast China. Harbin is a Manchu word meaning "a place for drying fishing nets”. The city was founded in 1898 with the coming of the Chinese Eastern Railway and prospered as a region inhabited by immigrants from the Russian Empire. It grew from a small rural settlement on the Songhua River to become one of the largest cities in northwest China. Today, the city serves as an important gateway in Sino-Russian trade....
